“Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, indeed, the King of Israel!”
—John 12:13
Palm Sunday marks the beginning of what we call Holy Week. It’s ironic how so many people were praising Jesus as He entered Jerusalem on this day, remembering the promise fulfilled in His arrival, only to turn on Him less than a week later and demand Jesus be crucified.
This triumphal entry was a glorious celebration, but it put the religious leaders on edge. As they witnessed people proclaiming Him to be the “King of Israel,” they instigated their plans to ensure He was not allowed to continue His ministry. As we know, they, along with the Roman government, succeeded in silencing this “King of the Jews” as they referred to Him, but they couldn’t keep Him quiet for long.
How do you celebrate Easter? What are some of your family practices to remember the greatest sacrifice ever made for our ultimate good? Do you attend a service? Do you make resurrection cookies (a childhood favorite of mine)? Do you walk through a Stations of the Cross in your area?
Holy Week ushers us into Easter, but it also concludes the season of Lent. Every year, I am reminded of my need to slow down and really dig into the heightened emotions and the intensity of everything this week held for Jesus as He journeyed to the cross.
After all, He endured the cross for my sake, and for that, I will forever be grateful and humbled. To Him be the glory forever and ever, amen.
For the week ahead, I wanted to invite you into a daily reflection on the steps Jesus took on His way to Golgotha that first Good Friday, leading up to the hope and good news of Resurrection Sunday.
If you’ve gone through this Holy Week Guide before, it’s always fun to see how God can reveal new things in new seasons, and I’d love to hear your reflections. Plus, I have updated and expanded the content for this year!
If you’re wary of finding time to do a daily devo this week, know that it can be accomplished in just 15-30 minutes per day, and I have learned that God is faithful to restore time and energy when we turn to Him in moments of study to absorb His Word.
I am praying for you and your family this week—for deeper gratitude, for renewed hope, and for a rested soul in the One who restores us daily.
